The Youth series is comprised of two paintings full of life and color. Blue watercolor is layered with a warm peach wash; the opposing temperatures of these tones (cool and warm) elude to a sense of balance within this organically shaped form. Purple markings continue to enliven the shapes, creating a sense of diverse optimism. Rich teracotta pastel markings, a more bold application than the watercolor markings within the work, suggest an interruption to these forms. These pastel lines nearly create a visual diversion from the peaceful nature of such a colorful meeting. Although the pastel lines interrupt the flow of the organic shapes, slicing this painting into unexpected sections and proportions, these two paintings absorb and adopt the intrusion with continued hopeful, colorful energy. The sense of energy and optimism is enhanced by subtle sage splatters that dance across the surface. Unlike other works in this collection such as Amoeba and the Halt series, the Youth series seems inextricable from the bold introduction of the pastel markings. The closeness of the pastel lines to the rest of the watercolor paintings, staying in close proximity rather than spreading across the page, suggests an interconnectedness to its host.
